In October, we posted this blog explaining that the time has come for Final Cut Pro 7 editors to begin thinking about the upgrade process because Apple’s new hardware comes pre-installed with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2, and is not backwards compatible – meaning you cannot install an older version of MAC OS X on your new machine, and in turn Final Cut Pro 7 is not supported on MAC OS X Mountain Lion.

We have heard from a number of industry veterans who have had success in running Final Cut Pro 7 on the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.  However, MelroseMAC recommends that you move forward cautiously.  Please keep in mind the following:

Final Cut Pro 7 is an End Of Life product

Although Apple upgraded Final Cut Pro 7 to work with Mountain Lion, Apple has discontinued Final Cut Pro 7 and replaced the product with Final Cut Pro X.  The new NLE from Apple is quickly becoming a valuable and cost-effective tool for the professional editor.  Apple is listening to its user base and making significant upgrades. Expect more improvements to the product in the not too distant future.

Our experts at MelroseTEC deliver complete turnkey information and communications technology solutions including: IP Networks, wireless, VOIP, and Cloud Services. Interested in learning more? Visit our MelroseTEC section and start solving your business and operational challenges.

You have options

Instead of running FCP7 on Mountain Lion, we encourage you to look at all of your options.  They get better every day.  MelroseMAC is authorized to sell and support all the top NLEs such as Avid Media Composer, Avid Symphony and Adobe Premiere Pro.  MelroseMAC, through our professional solutions division MelroseTEC, is available to answer any questions you have about upgrading your editing pipeline.   If you have not looked at alternative editors lately, please contact us.  We would be happy to arrange a product demonstration for you.
